NAMM 2010

01.17.10

2010 officially marks my 10 year anniversary living and working in Los Angeles. It also brings with it my 10th trip to NAMM. Every year I go, I make lots of new friends, I get to catch up with people that I seldom see (even though many of them live within a half an hour drive from my house), and I am also reminded each year of how cool it is that I get to make my living by playing and writing music. There just arent many better ways to live! Of course, NAMM is also about the products, and this year there was lots of great new stuff to see. Evans has a new priniting system for bass drum resonant heads. The entire process is done online through their website, and it is totally customizable. You can upload your own .jpg files, or use their templates and add any text you like. Its half the price of anyone else's system, and you get the product in half the time. Pretty cool!! Check it out at their website. This year is Yamaha's 50th anniversary in America, and true to form, they had some great products to show. Of course, I am crazy about the Phoenix kit... What an amazing sounding drum set. Teddy Campbell played his at the 50th Anniversay show on Friday night, and in the house it was incredible! In addition, there is a new rock kit out now, and the finishes are amazing. Not to mention that they sound great... big, fat sound that really cuts, perfect for a big rock stage. Lastly... I am IN LOVE with the new Zildjian Constantinople Bounce Ride. They had three of them at the booth, and they were all amazing. Very classic jazz ride... dark, lots of character to the low end, beautiful stick attack, and reponds well when you play it as a crash. I gotta get one!!! It was great seeing everyone at the show this year... Really a great start to 2010.
